Biodynamics, in a nutshell, is an extreme method organic farming, which invovles creating a vineyard or an estate into its own micro-ecosystem. This method of viticulture interests us more so than conventional organic farming, as vignerons who practice this method are convinced that wines made from biodynamically grown grapes have a more pronounced expression of terroir. Biodynamics is certified the ‘Demeter’, their symbol can sometimes, but not always found on biodynamic wines. The cornerstone of Biodynamics is the 9 compost preparations and sprays, which are named 500 – 508. The composts are totally natural and the spray, composed of quartz and cow horn, is diluted to almost homeopathic like concentration. Biodynamic wines are not only friendly to the environment as insects, birds and wild flora are encouraged in the system, but also, largely, vignerons who practice this method are also highly conscientious viticulturists, who work hard in the vineyard, and seek to produce wines that have balance and purity and express their sense of place.
